It's Coming up!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Children of all ages (from 20ish - 30ish) the first gathering event of Third Space is rapidly approaching! We are busy finalizing worship songs, messages, activities, and the like to make this first event a success! The first Third Space Event is going to be on September 18th.

SEPTEMBER 18th!

I want to take just a few minutes and talk about Provision. I have been doing my personal studies in Exodus lately, and I just finished reading all about the Tabernacle. I love this portion of Scripture. Think about it, the Israelites who were held in captivity for over 400 years where led out of Egypt right on schedule through an amazing series of events; the plagues, the Red Sea etc... Now God calls Moses up to the top of Mt. Sinai to give him the Law, an impossible tool or standard to stay in right standing with God. Part of this time is taken up with God giving specific instructions about the Tabernacle; how to build it, what to make it out of, what to put in it. Here we have God, desiring fellowship with man, and meeting on a mountain top to share His specific instructions!? THAT is amazing! So here comes the meat. God then appointed two men, in which He gave the skills to appoint all sorts of crafts. I sat around and thought about this for a long while. I thought about how the Lord wanted and instructed Moses and the Israelites to do something, and then provided the way for them to do it. Then I began to look throughout all of Scripture and throughout my life and saw this theme through and through. God provided His Son for our salvation, He provided His Spirit for our sanctification, He provided His Word to speak Truth into our lives. I could go on and on. However, if I were to ask you, "Is God a Provider?" You would say something like "Yeah of course! Jehovah Jireh!" But maybe, just maybe if I were to ask you "what are 10 ways the Lord has provided for you?" It might take some more thought. Take some time this week to reflect on how specifically the Lord has provided for you in your life and think about upon His Son, His Spirit, His Word have affected your life.

Maybe the Lord is using us to provide a place in Alamance County where young adults of all walks and stages of life can come together and fellowship and grow with one another...

Thoughts on Time

I was sitting and thinking today about time, and how time relates to our spiritual growth. Everyday I wake up and as the day progresses (which sometimes is only a few seconds) get frustrated with what my "Flesh," my "Power" is capable of, and how weak and short that always and will always fall to the perfect sinlessness of our Lord. Everyday I am ready to be "mature," I am ready to have arrived, to be completely transformed into the likeness of Christ where I no longer live but Christ fully lives through me (Galatians 2:19-20). This of course has not and probably will not happen. However over time we can have faith that we ARE being matured that we ARE growing!. The Bible tells us that we can be sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion. (Philippians 1:6)We must realize that the Lord is working from and for eternity. I often feel as though I am not making progress in my Christian walk unless I am learning new things each and everyday, unless I am a cup ready to overflow. Let's face it, though those times are beautiful they are so often not how we feel. If we were to be honest we might even say that those times are flat our scarce.
I started to look at some prominent Bible characters and see how long it took them to enter into their ministries. Moses was in the deserts of Midian for 40 years after he killed the Egyptian and before he went back to lead his people to freedom. Jesus was on earth for 30 years before He began His ministry. Let's look at Paul for a second. Paul spent 3 years after his first testimony before going out and preaching. John Darby says, "we must get to know ourselves and that we have no strength. Thus we must learn, and then leaning on the Lord we can with more maturity, and more experientially, deal with souls." This is a beautiful statement that I believe is exemplified in Romans 7:21-25. Paul says something to the extent of: I know what I want to do, but I cannot do it! I also know what I don't want to do, but somehow I continually do that very thing! Then in verse 24 he comes to the dramatic conclusion, "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God - Through Jesus Christ our Lord." Paul was living his life, growing in the Lord learning that he had no strength.
Have you ever thought about how a tree develops? I read somewhere that the actual outward growth of a tree only takes place for 4-6 weeks in May, June, and July. The rest of the year's growth is spent on solidification; without this process the green timber would be useless. This can also be used as an example in our Christian Walk. There are times where we are growing, times where our cup runneth over, and then there are times where habit and discipline are the only things keeping us going. So if you are struggling for growth, if you feel like your Christian walk is stagnant, we must remember the "remedy" that Bob talked about last sunday. I don't remember it exactly but it was basically this: Stay in the Word, Stay in prayer, and seek Biblical mentors or people who can speak truth into your life, and most of all put your faith in the fact that He who started a good work in us will carry it out to completion!

A Brief Study on Faith.

Faith; we all have it, we all practice it everyday whether you're cranking your car or sitting in a chair, you have faith that what you're doing or working with will act as it should act. What is True Faith though? Through reading the Word we see that this True Faith is important. In 2 Corinthians 13:5 Paul says to, "Examine yourselves whether ye be in the faith," and later in Hebrews 11:6 "Without faith it is impossible to please him." The answer comes to us from Romans 10:17, "Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." So True Faith is solely based on scripture; the Word of God.
Think back to when you were first saved. For some of us, myself included, our faith was motivated by a fear of hell. For others it was because of a realization of sin and an outlet to be freed from that. Whatever your motivation was for salvation your FAITH rested solely on Jesus Christ, His redeeming death, burial and resurrection. "As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him." Colossians 2:6. Just as our faith was solely resting on Jesus Christ when we were first saved, so it should continue to rest solely on him as we grow, mature, and are being transformed into His image.
Since we see now that True Faith is based solely on scripture we must be careful in this culture and world of ours not to be influenced by "impressions, probabilities, or what we think God is like." I had a professor in school who would always say, "A life of sight depends on self and circumstance, but a life of faith depends on God and His certain word," Mike Sullivan. So often times growing up I would go on a youth retreat, or to a Christian summer camp and come home so fired up for the Lord, but then a week or so would pass and I'd find myself right back where I was; the emotional high was gone. I was allowing my faith to be influenced by my emotions. There is nothing wrong with mountain top experiences don't get me wrong, but we should allow those experiences to point us back to the Word of God that we may be building lasting Biblical truth that never changes or wavers.
Lastly as we begin to count on scripture as our source of faith, we see that the Lord, through His Spirit, begins to build us up in that faith. More often times than not that building up in faith is not an easy task. Have you ever noticed how much more you depend on the Lord when things go wrong? When you're at your wits end it is so easy to call upon the Lord for help, however when you are on cloud 9 and everything is going according to plan praising the Lord seems to often slip from our minds. Enter trials, obstacles, tribulations, defeats and failures; these things are soft soil for faith. James McConkey writes, "Faith is dependence upon God. And this God-dependence only begins when self-dependence ends. And self-dependence only comes to its end, with some of us, when sorrow, suffering, affliction, broken plans and hopes bring us to that place of self-helplessness and defeat; only then do we find that we have learned the lesson of faith.
I encourage you all to dig deep into the Word, that special revelation we have from the Lord Himself. Allow this to be your source of True Faith, and praise the Lord as we are continually being sanctified.

1st Eat-n-Meet!

Wow! What a turn out for the first Eat-n-Meet! We had 21 people there! Who knew that a lot of planning and an 8 foot sub could draw so much attention! We want to thank everyone for coming out and for being so cool, as we shared with you our vision for the young adults at St. Mark's. Also we want to thank everyone who came up to us afterwards and expressed interest in helping us to plan these "gathering" meetings that we are going to have! More to come soon...

What's in a name?

Several people have come up to us asking about this mysterious "Third Space." What is that name all about? What is a Third Space? To answer that question we must first look to the source of truth on the internet: Wikipedia (notice the small 't' in truth). Wikipedia defines a third space as:
"A term used in the concept of community building to refer to social surroundings separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace."

That is a pretty straight forward definition; now to put a St. Mark's Spin on it. We want to create a "Third Space" for young adults. A place where singles, marrieds, marrieds with kids etc... from the ages of 20-30s can come to hang out with other like minded Christ centered young adults. We want to provide a place that is separate from your home and work where lasting friendships will form and discipleship will take place.
Jason and Colleen Houck and I were interviewed by Jarm Turner the other night about this new ministry, and one very critical question was raised, "It is said that whoever wins the battle for the Third Spaces of a generation has the influence to form the culture or ethos of that generation. Why do you think it is important that the church fights for that influence? What is at stake here?" This question really stuck with me. Think about your time, think about your third space. Is it a small group ministry? Is it on the sidelines of soccer games, bars, coffee shops, or a second job? How do these things affect your mindset: how you think, what you do? Have you ever thought about it?

For more information about the Third Space and how you can get involved come to our Eat-N-Meets on June 21 and June 28th at noon at the Burlington Campus! We are going to be going over leadership roles, introducing the team and asking for helpers to get this ministry started! See you there!

But encourage one another daily as long as it is called today so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness. Hebrews 3:13
